Strat Update
Ok, so after a lot of research and thought, I decided to make a few changes to my strat. I am going to eliminate one of the t
one knobs, put in a tone selector switch to handle both of the tone caps that I couldn't decide which one sounded best. I decided also to go about the series parallel a different way. Before I used to get a dead spot, and it didn't really sound like I was in parallel, when I was. So I decided to give this wiring a shot, and see if I like it. As you can see, the neck and middle are wired like a series parallel switch on a Les Paul. I then made a second series parallel switch to send the combined NM to the Bridge. I don't exactly know how this will sound, but I'll give a shot and see what happens. I also decided to put this after the on off switches instead of before. We will see how it goes.
I bought some really nice push pull pots from Stew Mac for about $10 each. They are CTS push pulls with the front circuit board. We'll see how they do.
I also picked up a couple of Chinese hot rails for about $10. I thought I'd give them a try. They have nearly the same output as my vintage noiseless. We'll see how they do and get back to you.
I also am going to try my hand at metal work. I am going to see if I can make this pick guard out of metal and plexiglass. This is a new idea, and I don't know if it will actually work. I'm not the best at using my dremel tool. It might just be a waste of metal. I don't know.

Rewiring My Strat
Well, it seems like every other year or so, I do a rewiring job on my strat for some reason or other.
Several years ago I made a trade and got this nice black Mexican Fender Strat in the deal. The first modification I decided to make was to change the pickguard from the white one it came with, to a molten metal looking one, and to add a push pull switch to the neck pickup so I could get all seven positions (N, M, B, NM, MB, NB and NMB). That wasn't good enough for me, so being a Brian May fan for a long time, I decided to wire my strat to be like his Red Special.
My philosophy on picking the pickups went something like this. I like Eric Clapton, and he tends to play mostly with the middle pickup on. So I decided to put a vintage noiseless in the middle. I also like Stevie Ray Vaughn's lead, and read that he played mostly in the neck position. So I got one of the pickups from his reissue strat (a Texas Special). I figured with those vintage sounding pickups, I could probably get a pretty good Jimi Hendrix Little Wing sound in the NM out of phase position. And I really liked (at the time) the bridge pickup that came with the Mexican Strat.
Over the last 10 years or so, the bridge pickup has lost it's appeal to me. I think it needs something a little warmer and less shrill. Also, with the MB in phase and in series it used to sound a lot like Brian May with the right amp settings. Now that I have a Fender Mustang modeling amp, it is easier than ever to get the Brian May sound. So my four favorite guitarists' sounds are within reach. I really like John Mayer's sound now, but he wasn't as popular when I first started working on this guitar. In addition, I like Johnny Lang's sound, a fat sounding Tele. Well, with the Neck and Bridge pickup in series in phase, I could get a reasonable facsimile to that sound as well.
This arrangement suited me very well for quite a long time, but I did notice that there were some redundant selections, and some dead spots. This year, I had a series of problems, first one of my toggle switches broke, leaving the neck pickup permanently on, and then as I was repairing that switch, one of my push pull knobs broke as well. I also had a problem with my Texas Special when I tried to put a new cover on it, one of the wires caught on a tiny bit of solder that somehow worked it's way up in there as I was working on something else, and the coil was damaged. I ended up scraping my beloved Texas Special pickup.
So I have decided to start over, but thought that it would make a good blog topic. I am replacing my Texas Special, probably with another Texas Special or a Tex-Mex pickup, since I got the guitar in Texas, I think it only fitting! I did the unthinkable and added a couple magnets to the bottom of the Mexican pickup, and it does sound hotter, but also more shrill. I will probably replace it with a Seymour Duncan split rails and coil split the pickup.
And finally, there was the awesome NMB in series powerhouse that sounded a bit like a Les Paul humbucking sound (at least to my ears).
So here is the wiring diagram that I have been working on. Notice that I have included Adrian Legg's safety circuit in case an amp ever goes live on me. I had this in the original design, so I thought I'd include it for you.
I also eliminated the bridge phase switch, it seemed redundant, and was part of the dead spot issue I was having. I don't really see the need for it. If you have two pickups, only one needs to go out of phase. BM can go out of phase with a phase switch on the M, and BN can go out of phase (for that country tele sound) with the neck phase switch. I think there might have been a NMB setting that I'm losing, but I never used it much that way anyway.
So I'll post pics as I go along, but here is the wiring diagram.
God bless,
Willy

ToB
Authored by Greg Kemp, Authored by Willy Minnix
In
the modern world, the factions of governments, religions, and military
powers are scrambling to answer one question: Who controls the Fear that
controls all people? Dr Karol Seguin has been hired by her publishing
company to document the day to day decisions of the current president of
the United States. He has uncanny intelligence and universal popular
regard. And from his impending resume of distinction, his constituency
has commissioned that his life be documented as in line with the great
leaders of history. Karol and her acquaintances, Col. Thomas Graile and
Justice Mel Sodeq, are bombarded with a flurry of new questions. Is
there technology to boldly manipulate the many populations of the world
by only one person? Are there secrets of antiquity that give hints and
clues to a power greater than mortality? What is a legend? What is a
conqueror? Ultimately, three questions exist: Is the world controlled
by omnipotence or debilitation? Is it better to be omnipresent or to be
continual in spirit? And the greatest of these questions is: Will the
minds of conquerable people fall by the individual who is omniscient or
the individual who can impose confusion? Mandolin Dead Man's Tuning Christmas Edition B&W:

Fairies: The Atrium: and other stories and selected poems
Authored by Willy Minnix
This book contains a couple short stories and poems that were first published in the Christian Sci-Fi Journal.
"I went down to the crossroads..." is a tale of someone retracing the steps of Robert Johnson, and what he actually found down at the crossroads!
The title story, "Fairies: The Atrium" is the tale of a genetic experiment gone wrong. The narrator details of what started out as a science fair project in middle school, but grew into his post graduate and ultimately life work. His genetic creation of diminutive creatures he dubs "fairies," grows from a couple little people into a whole society of creatures complete with all of the social problems that humans face. When he genetically develops the perfect creature to teach the rest of his "children" how to live, something goes terribly wrong, and his atrium will never be the same...
Included in this volume are several poems that were also published in the Christian Sci-Fi Journal.

Interview with Mr. Cotton
Hey Everyone!
The new edition of Forsyth Family Magazine has my recent interview with Philo Hill Music and Band Teacher Mr. Curtis Cotton! My kids really love Mr. Cotton, and enjoy learning their instruments: drums and saxophone from him.
Check out the current issue here: http://www.forsythfamilymagazine.com/
In this interview we talked a lot more than I was able to put in the article. We discuss a lot of topics like music education, band in North Carolina and much more. Please check out this video for the full interview.

Why I don’t think
Zoroaster influenced Daniel:
-
The Zoroastrian sacred texts (the Avesta) were
supposedly written down in 346-360 AD, though the earliest copies we have are from
the 1200’s. There are references to Zoroastrian belief as late as Plutarch in AD46
– AD120, who believed Zoroaster lived at 6,000 BC, which is ridiculous.
-
What we know about Zoroaster was written down at least
929 years after he was supposed to have lived. We don’t know anything
specifically about him that comes from the time in which he lived.
-
Zoroaster was supposed to have died in 583 BC, which would
put him contemporaneously with the prophet Daniel, though they claim that he
wrote the Avesta sometime before the 10 Century BC. It is ridiculous to believe
the Zoroaster lived from 1000 BC to 583 BC that would make Zoroaster over 400
years old.
-
Many claim that the stories of Jesus were based on
Zoroaster, however, the stories of Zoroaster were written down in 346-360 AD,
300 years after Jesus lived. Isn’t it more conceivable that Zoroastrian
similarities to Jesus were based on Jesus, since they were written down 300
years later?
-
Many of the stories about Zoroaster are similar also to
Daniel, and we know that the earliest references to Daniel are at the latest within
a couple hundred years of when Daniel lived. Doesn’t it make sense that maybe
Zoroaster was based on Daniel, and not the other way around?
-
Babylonian and Persian society was polytheistic before
Daniel. Many of the Persian kings were descended from Esther. Monotheism
developed in Israel first
before Persia, and history
shows that for a fact that Babylon conquered Israel,
bringing monotheism in contact with Babylonian religion. The Babylonians were
overthrown by the polytheistic Persians, who were then brought into contact
with the monotheistic Jews. After Persian contact with Jews Persians became monotheistic.
We can’t prove that Zoroastrianism as we know it today even existed at the time
of the Jewish captivity in Babylon,
therefore, wouldn’t it make sense that the Monotheistic elements of
Zoroastrianism came from Daniel, and not the other way around?

Sir Pizza: A Little Slice of Hoosier Heaven in the Piedmont
Sir Pizza: A Little
Slice of Hoosier Heaven in the Piedmont
I’m originally from Richmond, IN, known for Earlham College,
Tom Raper RVs, being the “Birthplace of Recorded Jazz,” and also for this funky
little pizza chain that serves awesome pizza with tiny chopped up pieces of
pepperoni. Richmond’s not that big of a town, about 40,000 people, but we have
not one, not two, not three, but FOUR of these pizza shops around town! That’s
how much we love this particular pizza.
Recently, I moved here to the Piedmont area from the frozen
tundra of rural Illinois, where the closest thing to a good pizza was a round
piece of cardboard with some tomato soup thrown at it and a couple pepperoni’s
and some stale cheese tossed on for good measure. Sadly, where we were there
was no “Chicago style” to be found! On the way down, we passed through
Richmond, and I desperately wanted to stop at my favorite pizza restaurant that
all the locals know as “Clara’s,” which has a double decker British city bus
inside the restaurant, where people can eat their pizza while looking at all of
the interesting décor like bicycles and beaded curtains hanging from the
ceiling, or the porch swings that you can sit on while dining on heavenly
pizza, and where every table has a Tiffany lamp lighting your meal. But we were
running late, so I had to settle for a quick burger at a truck stop.
So, imagine my surprise when I dropped my wife off at work
one morning in High Point, and spotted on my way a place called “Sir Pizza.” I
was intrigued. I saw the cool little Tiffany lamp logo, and thought to myself,
“Is this place like ‘Clara’s?’ No, couldn’t be, that’s a Hoosier thing.
Couldn’t even find one in Illinois. Why would there be one here?” So I went
home.
A couple days later, I was driving by again, and this time
went all the way through High Point, and saw another Sir Pizza. So that night,
I gathered my family and decided to give it a try. “Tonight my children, you
will experience True Pizza.” I felt like a lonely prophet beholding the
Promised Land after years of wandering in the wilderness. For years I had told
them that such pizza existed somewhere in the world, but alas, rural Illinois
did not offer pizza of that variety. I walked in and asked the friendly lady
behind the counter for a menu, and then probed, “Do you guys (I’m not quite southern yet, y’all) make
your pizza with the tiny little pepperonis?”
“Yes, we sure do.”
Suddenly, the rapture happened, and I stood before the
throne of God with angels singing anthems of delight! Well, no, that didn’t
quite happen, but I was pretty happy. So I got my 8 inch “Royal Feast” for me
and my wife, and a Hawaiian 16 inch for the kids and went home, happy as could
be. My kids, who for so long went without true pizza ate it with joy, declaring
it to be the best pizza they ever ate (though, compared to cardboard pizza,
real tomato sauce on a cracker would be a step in the right direction). But it
really wasn’t much of a surprise to see all of the “Best Pizza” awards
displayed behind the counter.
So while I was waiting for my pizza of infinite bounty and
delight, I found out from the lady behind the counter that Sir Pizza did indeed
originate in Indiana, but she didn’t know all of the particulars. I don’t know
if it is directly connected with the pizza chain from Richmond, but to find
such a treasure of Hoosier happiness down here in my new home made me so happy.
I have lived all over the country, Indiana, Texas, Georgia, New York and yes,
the frozen tundra of rural Illinois, but I have to say that moving to Winston-Salem
has been one of my happiest moves. I love it here, and am so thankful for a
place to find some good pizza!
